Running the Runway at Manchester airport

Runners, joggers and walkers are being given a unique opportunity to turn the runway red at Manchester Airport to raise funds for two special charities. Manchester Airport and British Airways are having a marathon celebrity event which takes off on Sunday September 21. The autumn fun runners will follow a four kilometre route around the perimeter of the UK’s third largest airport. The event is in aid of Flying Start, British Airways’ global charity partnership with Comic Relief UK, and Medcare, Manchester Airport’s supported charity at the Wellspring Children’s Medical Centre in Kamutuuza, Uganda. Participants are being asked to wear something red and to raise a minimum of £25 in order to take part. They will be joined at the start line and during the run by a number of famous faces, with the full celebrity line up to be revealed at a later date. The starting point is the Runway Visitor Park and participants will literally run round Manchester Airport’s runways following the Runway Two Nature Trail through the Bollin Valley which offers some fantastic viewing points for watching aircraft landing and taking off. Those competing at a more leisurely pace will be able to read information boards around the Trail giving information on woodlands and grasslands, ponds, the River Bollin tunnel, bats, archaeology and a sculpture of the British Airways Concorde made out of willow. Anne-Marie Ryan, British Airways’ customer service manager Manchester, said: “This is a great opportunity for a family fun day out to raise funds for two fantastic charities. We’re hoping to attract some serious fundraisers as well as some aviation fans.” Wendy Sinfield, community relations manager at Manchester Airport, said: “We are delighted to be able to join forces for such a worthwhile case. Where else can people get up close to a range of aircraft, do some exercise and raise money for good cases at the same time. “We are sure the run will be a huge hit with aviation and fitness fans alike and we look forward to donning something red to hit the trail in September”. A selection of prizes are on offer for participants, these include:

· 1st prize – British Airways flights to Paris or Barcelona from Manchester via London Heathrow · 2nd prize – a VIP Manchester Airport experience, including complimentary car parking, FastTrack and Escape Lounge or Executive Lounge access · 3rd prize – a British Airways hamper
